When were Christmas trees first commercially sold in the U.S.?

1851

During the 1700s, Germans and Austrians brought evergreen tops into their homes at Christmas and hung them top-down from the ceiling. They'd decorate the tops with candied nuts, apples, and red paper strips. These tops acquired the name "sugartrees" because of the edible ornaments. German settlers migrated to the U.S. in the early 1800s and introduced the Christmas tree. The trees morphed from tabletop size to floor-to-ceiling sizes. It was in 1851 that Christmas trees began selling commercially. These trees were usually procured at random from the surrounding forests. Source: RealChristmasTrees.org
